I have been very lucky in my breastfeeding journey. Sam latched easily, my milk supply came in right away, and Sam has gained weight quickly. The one difficult part of my journey has been that I have an oversupply and overactive letdown but with a few tweaks I have found ways to control it. On my journey I have found a few items that I absolutely love and that have really helped me a lot!
First is finding the right nursing bra. For around the house and at night I love this one from Kindred Bravely. It is soft, easy to pull to the side, and is so comfortable. For working out (low impact) I am in love with the Rosie Pope sports bras. Again, definitely low impact but comfortable and has cups inside 🙂
I had no idea how much milk I would have…..and how much I would leak! I had originally purchased disposable nursing pads but quickly learned how many I would go through. So I decided to purchase these bamboo nursing pads. They are very soft, comfortable and machine washable. Plus they are very absorbent which is great for those of us with an overactive letdown!
Speaking of overactive letdown, when Sam is nursing on one side I would literally lose 2-3 oz of milk on the other side just from letdown and leaking. So when I discovered the Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump it was life changing! I just suction it to my other breast and that is it! I don’t hand pump it but just let it collect and pull out the milk that I would have been wasting previously. I literally get 4-5 oz for every feeding just on one side. It is amazing and saves me from really ever having to pump with my electric pump.
Breastfeeding pillows are obviously super helpful but I suggest trying them out. I have the Ergo Natural Curve and really like it because it is quite structured. It is made of foam so much firmer than some of the other pillows. However, some people might like something softer so I suggest trying these out before buying one.
I have absolutely loved breastfeeding and plan to continue for the recommended year. I hope some of these items can help you on your journey!
