When last we left our outdoor space, we had finally cleaned it up! It took a lot of weeding (and really needs some more now!), but it finally was looking good! Since then we have added a few more elements to our outdoor area!
1. Flag Pole
Fact: When I look out my window, I can see 4 American flags. Dan wanted to make sure that we added our own! We used this flag pole (only three sections so it wasn’t as tall in our crazy wind) and this solar light so you can see them at night (you can’t see all of both flags, but it is better than nothing). It is almost always windy here, so it is nice to see the flags blowing in the breeze.
2. Fire Pit
While I was overseas (you can check out what I was doing here and here), Dan built us a firepit! He did an awesome job and it cost under $150! We just had our first fire and I know we will have many more. Stay tuned for more info on how we built it : )
3.Bushes and Railing
So these are actually subtractions, but we took out the giant bushes in front of our dock. You could hardly even get to the dock and they blocked the view, so out they went. For some reason, this photo with snow on the ground is the only one I can find of what it looked like when we moved in!
We also took down the railing- it was more a hazard than a help- it would have probably broken off if anyone really needed it! And we were the only people on the island with a railing- crazy.
Dan really wants to build a little sitting area at the end of the dock- there was one there previously but it was destroyed during a storm (in the picture above you can kind of see at the end how there are extra posts). One of our neighbors has an awesome area at the end of theirs- complete with umbrellas! Oh and we kept the swing- it is to the right of our awesome hammock!
4. New Plants
After we cleared out all of the weeds, we were left with a few holes in the garden. On the side of the house I planted this Crepe Myrtle Tree. Right now it’s a bit small and bush-like, but eventually I will prune her like a tree! We had a beautiful Crepe Myrtle in our old backyard, so I wanted another one!
On the right side of the backyard, I planted a Crepe Myrtle bush- this one grows more sideways and less up. I was so excited that both of them already bloomed! Things grow really fast around here, so I am hoping these will fill out fast.
On the left side, I planted two Viburnum bushes. They seem like they are doing ok- they bloom in the spring, so I will have to wait awhile to find out. They have beautiful flowers, so I am hoping they do well!
So that is what’s new in the yard. One of these days, we will hopefully have outdoor furniture- imagine that- somewhere to sit and enjoy our incredible view!
