We talk a lot about our dogs around here, but once upon a time, I loved my cat more than anything! In honor of Purina Cat Chow and the “Nutrition to Build Better Lives” program, I am going to share one of my favorite family cat stories!
When I was in second grade, all I wanted was a cat. I asked for one daily, and never thought it would happen. My mom must have gotten pretty annoyed with all of the asking. For Christmas that year, a cat was all I wanted. I asked Santa and everything!
Christmas morning came and I headed out to the living room. I saw cat bowls, cat food, a cat carrier, and cat toys… but no cat. I started bawling. If I had of been a smart 2nd grader, I would have thought, “Yay! Mom is letting me pick out my own cat!” But I wasn’t.
My mom came out to the living room and asked what was wrong- I told her there was no cat. She looked a bit shocked and told me she had seen the cat and Santa told her he was there. We looked and looked and looked. The cat was gone! Holly was annoyed that we couldn’t open presents because we were looking for a cat. Finally, I walked back to the Christmas tree to cry some more. The tree started trembling…
The cat had climbed up the Christmas tree! He was all the way at the top, and couldn’t find his way back down. He was tiny and cute, and I was the happiest child with my cat! Mom told me to name him- I wanted to name him Elvis, but for some reason decided on Rusty (Elvis would have been a better name- he was quite a drama king!).
Rusty came to show and tell with me at school, loved the car and hated being held. He moved with us at least 6 times and had quite a good life! He was the king of the house until our dog came around- but he was still very loved!
The “Nutrition to Build Better Lives” program has a goal of donating up to five million meals to cats in need through their non-profit partner, Rescue Bank. Since I no longer have a cat, I grabbed a few friends, and we decided to buy a bag and donate it to my local shelter- anything to help the cats! Each year only half of cats taken in by animal shelters are adopted. Simply by buying a bag of Purina, you can help too!
If you have a cat or just want to help the kitties, grab a bag of Purina in July! I would love to hear- are you a cat person or a dog person? How did your cat become part of your family?
